October 28, 2004 -- Latinos READ is a literary and literacy event that brings Latino celebrities together with the citizens of Dallas to promote reading and early childhood education. In its second year, this important event benefits Mi Escuelita Schools and the WB33 Kids Fund, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation.

Nicholas was one of the celebrities asked to participate in this year’s fundraiser, and I went along to see his performance and offer my support.

Celebrity readers (from left) Mike Gomez, Nicholas Gonzalez, Liza Echeverria, Dr. Isabel, Gloria Araya-Quinlan, Dennis Leoni, Margo Reymundo &  Alex Sanchez.

As the author of a young adult novel featuring a cast of Latino characters, I was thrilled to be able to spend some time with another Simon & Schuster writer, Alex Sanchez.  Alex is the author of four successful books, including the Rainbow Boys Trilogy and So Hard to Say.

Alex was gracious enough to cancel his flight from Dallas to Austin the next day and spend four hours in the car with me, driving!  It was a great opportunity for me to pick his brain about writing, editing, and getting a book published.

Tell him I said hello!
