I’ll be making an appearance with other authors and illustrators at the 2005 Latino Book & Family Festival in Pomona, California.  My scheduled stage time is at 3:30 on Saturday, October 22nd.  If you live in the area, be sure to stop by.  You can also “attend” the festival via a live WebCast at the Festival’s Home Page.  Check back soon for some pictures and a report on how things went.

The Northern California Independent Booksellers Association held their annual trade show in Oakland this year.  Desert Blood 10pm/9c was featured at two high-profile displays:  Simon & Schuster and The Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators.

The two-day trade show was an excellent opportunity to hang out with other authors, spend time with my publicist and sales reps, and most importantly, to meet booksellers!  (The dozens of free books were cool, too.)

I spent the weekend down in Los Angeles, hanging out with my friends Nathan Marlow and Nicholas Gonzalez.  Both of them were excited to see the progress the book has made in just the past few weeks.

Simon & Schuster is thrilled with the publicity I’ve got going so far.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be attending the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association trade show, the Latino Book Festival, and the Texas Book Festival.  Lots of updates forthcoming...

Even though the official February publication of Desert Blood 10pm/9c seems a long way off, now is the time to work hard promoting the book and getting booksellers, librarians, and prospective buyers interested in reading it.  I recently attended an event featuring an author I grew up reading-- David Morrell.  We spoke at length about the best ways to do promotion.  Even though David’s published over 20 books in his career, he’s still working hard to meet fans, greet store owners, and spread the word about his novels.  The newest one is titled Creepers, and a visit to his spooky site will show the effort he’s putting into its promotion.

Cisco and I are back from our first Bouchercon!  It was an amazing experience, and it provided me with the chance to make new friends and connect with other mystery writers.  It was also an opportunity to introduce Desert Blood 10pm/9c to the mystery world.  The four day event was packed with panels, signings, food, games, and a ton of fun.  Check out some pics here!

The book is moving right along...I received the Advanced Reader’s copies today.  It’s an amazing feeling to finally be able to hold it in my hands.  I think it looks great, too.  Check out this pic.  (Click to view full size.)

Bouchercon 2005 -- I’m going to be attending Bouchercon in Chicago over the Labor Day weekend.  I’ll take plenty of pictures and share them when I get back!

My buddy Francisco and I just returned from a few days in the South Carolina low country, where we spent quality time with my family at a wonderful beach house on Fripp Island.

The weather was hot and sunny, the food fantastic, and the sights of Charleston and Savannah inspiring.  See some pictures from our trip here!

I recently had the privilege of hanging out with author Joe Konrath at a signing in San Mateo, California.  He was reading from his new book, Bloody Mary, at the popular M is for Mystery Bookstore.

For anyone interested in writing and publishing, a visit to Joe’s website and blog is a must.  It is loaded with tips, advice and humor.

Simon & Schuster finally sent over the cover art for the book, and I think it looks fantastic!

While the blood spatter and flames and cleavage probably won’t appeal to everyone, I believe the targeted audience -- teenaged boys-- will eat it up.

I’m especially pleased with the way the title, Desert Blood 10pm / 9c, looks in the overall design.  Click the image to the right to enlarge.

For those of you wondering where the idea for such an eye-catching piece of artwork came from, take a look at the book’s prologue
here.  Your question will be answered.
